Lake District
Sharp Edge, Blencathra

"Imogen (7), Molly (5, Mountain Rescue Search Dog) and I would recommend Sharp Edge on Blencathra as a good starting point for any would-be scramblers.

The walk-in from Scales via Scales Tarn is fairly straightforward and achievable for kids.

The ridge itself gets a Grade 1*** in ‘Scrambles in the Lake District' and as the guide suggests could be varied for more or less exposure and difficulty.  In wet weather the route can be slippery and this should be considered carefully before setting out (check out www.keswickmrt.org.uk & go to Rescues/Sharp Edge if you need to see why).  The biggest difficulty Imogen found was climbing past the grown-ups clinging to the ridge at various locations.

Once at the top the views are often great; East to the Pennines or South across Derwent Water to the Scafell massif.  A great photo opportunity for a first summit."

Imogen Hey says:

"I thought Sharp Edge was a good scramble because it was very challenging; I had to pick my way over the rocks and it was lumpy-bumpy but the actual scrambling wasn't too tricky.  When I got to the top I felt proud of myself.  The view was beautiful you could see the tarn which was my favourite bit.  Some people were a bit scared and I had to climb past them. It was the best climb I have ever done.  I was the youngest person on the mountain that day!  Imogen Hey, August 2007, Age 7 "

Many thanks to Richard & Imogen Hey for the reviews. Richard is a member of Swaledale MRT and SARDA England.
